Since Politics Has Gotten Slow...

...let's speculate on the distribution of technological civilizations throughout the Universe! Charles Stross has some mighty fine thoughts on the subject.

I have to admit that the "Berserker" answer to the Fermi Paradox, i.e. "Everybody who survived learned to shut up before somebody came and destroyed them," is still remarkably compelling, despite its profound level of paranoia. I keep thinking how we humans would react to the news that there was an alien civilization within about 100 light-years of us that was nearing the brink of interstellar capability. At the very least, we'd want to watch them awfully carefully. And if they showed any signs of hinkiness? Well, that would be unfortunate, for one, the other, or both civilizations.
