The NYT jumps onto the Obama assasination hand-wringing bandwagon.
Look. If anything happened, it would be a national disaster. But the public has no "right to know" concerning this. There is absolutely nothing that being better informed about other people worrying about the assassination of a national leader can do to affect the public good. Quite the contrary; building a national narrative around this can only increase the chances of something bad happening.
On the other hand, whipping up such worries to the media frenzy flash-over point is enormously good for circulation and ratings. But that's it. Equating public knowledge with ratings is morally reprehensible.
May I politely suggest that the NYT and everybody else simply shut the fuck up about this?
