Peter Beinart thinks that the GOP needs to form a Republican Leadership Council with teeth. The goal would be to break the stranglehold that the right-wing base has on the nominating process by giving moderate Republicans a playbook for issues, while luring independents into the primaries on the GOP side.
This last is a tactic I'd like to advocate. If independents vote in open primaries for the least extreme candidate of either party, we'd get a lot more pragmatic government.
